78 Recovery

This week we catch up on Tig and Kyle and Hurricane Sandy (Sandra D) and New York and the notion of recovery. What exactly is recovery? Is it inherent that we’ll always recover? And who will wrangle Aaron with Tig outside of the hatch? What does recovery mean to you? Listen in on the conversation at earwolf.com

  1. I just wanted to leave a note RE: Global Warming episode since you brought up the massive negative response in Episode 78.

As an avid blastronaut and current Biology PhD student, I was very disappointed… and by that I mean that I found myself screaming at my radio like I was taking crazy pills. I wanted to express said disappointment without getting nasty so I gave it a little bit of time…

My personal opinion is that it was a gigantic missed opportunity for the podcast. Mr Yates did a pretty bad job of presenting an accurate account of the scientific facts on the subject and did a really great job at overstating the uncertainty. People also do this when trying to argue against evolution and it is a crime!

I took a class on Sea Level Rise with some engineers and fellow PhDs here in Florida, I was not prepared for how disparate the viewpoints between the two groups were at times… Maybe PB needs to see a different, balancing viewpoint on Global Warming? Perhaps PB should have a scientist on; someone who can put the current trends out on the table, explain the facts that have been verified by the scientific method and published in peer-reviewed literature, and put the geologic data into perspective in the ways that Mr. Yates did not. So there is my restrained criticism of Mr. Yates and my suggestion for redemption— Global Warming, ROUND 2!!!!!! Bring on the nerds!

Love the podcast!! It is literally my favorite!!!!! Kyle– so glad you didn’t kill Sarah’s dog in the elevator <3

  2. Tig is the modern day Typhoid Mary. She moves to NY and Sandy comes. I’m starting to buy that she is being plagued by bad Karma. She should come clean about her past. This woman will just keep infecting the world. LOL.

  3. I apologize if my comments about the global warming episode bummed out the PB team. My comment that Huntsberger didn’t know “one damn thing” about science wasn’t constructive. I do love everyone on the show–Aaron, Tig and David. And how many podcasts can boast a regular appearance by Paul Reubens ( though his “Kyle” character lacks the depth of “Pee-Wee”)?

However, I think the team failed to appreciate the utter seriousness of their topic, and they brought in a guest who is clearly not an expert on the subject. Steve Yates may be a nice person (I never suggested otherwise. ), but he shouldn’t present himself as an authority when his command of the science is shaky at best.

And to Tig’s point, one doesn’t have to purchase media to object to it. The Internet has increasingly made media more of a dialog than a top-down process. I was attempting to participate in that dialog. Again, I apologize that, for that episode, my frustration came through.

Otherwise, keep up the good work.

  4. Tig will never recover from what she done. In the bible what she done would get her even sicker . I have a real good question ready for her at her live show. I sure hope she answer it.

  5. … You know guys one of the things that makes this podcast great is David Huntsberger’s opinions on all these topics … So … Why the F-Bomb is there so much negativity surrounding the Global Warming episode? What is this trying to accomplish? The End of Professor Blastoff? In case you haven’t been listening, David has frequently been skeptical on many themes. And in my case that’s what makes PB relatable (though the comedy is also a huge portion of the attraction) … Yes the debate was on the less popular view of climate change but its not like David or Steve Yates came up with this idea, its been out there for awhile. Let us not forget my fellow Blastronauts that once, a very long time ago Pluto was undisputed as a planet … There is so much you can talk about in an hour and with the very loose exchange between Kyle, David & Tig it shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone if something is not touched upon. I got an idea, you devoted critics of the global warming episode want a better show on climate change? Then go start a kick starter or something. If my grandfather were still alive he would say right about now “that’s the problem with this new generation, they want everything for free!” peAce
